Bringing Hope and Clean Water to Ghana: The Story of Delmarva Christian's Well Project

At Delmarva Christian's Elementary and Middle School, the spirit of compassion and community is embodied in our annual “Well Wars” fundraising competition. This initiative highlights our commitment to making a tangible difference in the world, specifically in Ghana, where access to clean water is a pressing need. Each year, our students and families come together to raise funds to construct wells in Ghana, and this year’s efforts have been nothing short of remarkable.

"Thank you all for supporting your children in being the hands and feet of Jesus through bringing in spare change. Together, we can make a difference for Jesus. We learned about the people of Ghana, their everyday lives, and the importance to have clean water. We helped them form a biblical worldview they will never forget. For the rest of their lives they can say they helped fund a water well in Bayowar Jan, Ghana. Thank you parents!" - Third Grade Teacher & Ghana Well War Coordinator Tracy Stratton

The Impact of Clean Water

Every year, over 1,000 children under the age of five lose their lives to diseases caused by contaminated water, poor sanitation, and unsafe hygiene practices. The statistics are staggering:
  • 703 million people around the world lack access to clean water, equating to 1 in 10 people on the planet.
  • Women and girls spend an estimated 200 million hours daily collecting water, often walking about 3.7 miles to carry 40 pounds of water.
  • 1.69 billion people live without access to adequate sanitation.
  • 419 million people practice open defecation, further exacerbating health risks.
These numbers are not just statistics; they are the daily realities faced by millions, a plight that our DCS community is passionate about alleviating.

Our Journey to Clean Water

This year, our dedicated students, families, and staff at Delmarva Christian Schools rallied together, raising enough funds to construct not just one, but two wells in Ghana. Each well costs approximately $3,500 to build, and through the generosity of our community, we have made a profound impact.

Good News from Ghana

Pastor John, our valued contact in Ghana, recently shared exciting news with us: “Greetings from Ghana 🇬🇭! To the Glory of God, the pump for the first well has been fixed, and clean water  is flowing. The concrete parts are being worked on, and we are looking forward to a successful completion so we can celebrate the goodness of God together.”
This message brings immense joy and underscores the direct impact of our collective efforts. The clean water now available to the community is a testament to what we can achieve when we unite for a common cause.

Celebrating Success

As we look forward to the successful completion of these wells, we celebrate not just the provision of clean water, but the hope, health, and joy in Jesus Christ it will bring to countless lives. The Well Project is more than just a fundraising event.
To all who participated in Well Wars, your efforts have made a difference. Your contributions have brought clean water to those in need, transforming lives and paving the way for a healthier, brighter future in Ghana.
