Teaching lessons in art history to the younger students is especially fun, because for many of them, they are learning about famous artists/artworks for the very first time! I also love teaching students how to draw, because drawing is my favorite art activity.
Why Delmarva Christian? The family atmosphere, the close-knit community, and the Christian foundation that the school is built upon are all reasons why I love teaching here. I live in Maryland, but the commute is well worth it to work in a Christian environment where I know I'm supported and encouraged.
How did you end up at Delmarva Christian?
Before I came to Delmarva Christian, I was a Kindergarten Instructional Assistant (and, as needed, a substitute teacher) for three years. The summer before I taught here, I was a camp counselor for the Delmarva Christian Summer Camp. I was so excited when I was given the opportunity to interview for the art teacher! I never thought I'd get to be an art teacher, let alone at a Christian school. This job was truly an answer to prayer.
What do you think is unique about Delmarva Christian?
I think Delmarva Christian is unique in that we emphasize "A Higher Standard". As Christians, I do believe we should have a higher standard in what we do and how we do it. I also truly appreciate how close we are with one another.
What is your favorite lesson to teach?
think it would be very difficult to choose a single favorite project. There are several I love to teach. I will say teaching lessons in art history to the younger students is especially fun, because for many of them, they are learning about famous artists/artworks for the very first time. I also love teaching students how to draw, because drawing is my favorite art activity.
Favorite verse or passage?
My art classroom Bible verse is Ephesians 2:10, which states that we are God's masterpiece. Two of my personal favorite life verses are Philippians 4:6-7 and Philippians 4:13.
Fun Fact?
1) I've met three of my favorite actors from the television show "Doctor Who" - Catherine Tate, David Tennant, and Peter Capaldi.
2) I am a published artist and author. I have had a snowman painting of mine published in a Canadian magazine; I had two of my poems and some of my artwork published into The Beacon, which was my local community college's student journal; and I had a short historical fiction story published with a collection of stories written by other local writers in Caroline County, Maryland. I'm certainly not a famous artist or author, but I still feel accomplished by having certain works of mine published.
